Biological Oils for Biological Acne Treatment

by Grant Ferns

Coleus forskohlii oil and Tetrahydropipertine are the two most important ingredients in the perfect skin treatment. In the proper combination, these ingredients act as an efficient instrument when combating skin difficulties.

Plectranthus barbatus, normally referred to Coleus forskohlii or Indian Coleus, is a tropical perennial flora related to the typical coleus species. Its kind belongs to the natural order Libiatae (Limiaceae), a family of lavenders and mints.

This plant grows wild in the warm sub-tropical areas in India, Burma and Thailand, and has been around for thousands of years. The Coleus forskohlii plant has primarily been cultivated and served as a condiment or pickle in these countries.

In recent years, Coleus forskohlii has piqued the curiosity of the medical community, because it is the only identified plant source of the adeneylate cyclic activating element, forskolin, that aids the organism to treat acne naturally.

Forskolin is usually used to increase levels of cyclic AMP (cAMP) in the study and investigation of cell physiology. Cyclic AMP is a necessary signal carrier that is important for the correct natural response of cell to hormones and other cellular signals. It is required for cell communication in the hypothalamus/pituitary gland axis and for the feedback control of hormones.

Forskolin-rich extracts are commercially obtained from the roots, which also yield a viscous dark brown colored vital oil containing a range of aroma elements that collectively leave a pleasing delicate smell with a spicy note.

The new anti-bacterial discovery.

The oils withdrawn from the Coleus forskohlii plant have recently been discovered to have anti-microbial qualities for efficient acne removal in topical preparations. A specific composition of the oil prepared by a patented process is specially efficient when treating Priopionibacterium acnes. In addition, the composition was found to be active against other microbes known to be associated with skin blemishes and eruptions.

In lab studies, Coleus oil was found to efficiently control the growth of skin pathogens including Priopionibacterium acnes (associated with acne), Staphylococcus aureus (a bacterial strain found in infected wounds and skin eruptions including acne), Staphylococcus epidermis (a bacterial strain happening in a variety of opportunistic bacterial dermal infections and in acne).

Mucocutaneous candidiosis is usually reported to have associations with the appearance of acne. Coleus oil has also been discovered to have abilities to control the yeast culture Candida albicans more effectively than the better known tea tree oil.

Tetrahydropiperine which is a compound present in small amounts in all black pepper fruit (piper nigrum) is added in a low concentrations to increase the permeation of Coleus forskohlii extract (forskolin) and of the other active elements. Studies have shown that Coleus oil extracted from the Indian Coleus plant contains forskolin elements that help cell communication. The oil also contains anti-bacterial qualities in topical solutions that prevents unwanted skin problems such as acne.
